Monome 64 - Sound On Sound
The Monome connects to the rest of the world via a recessed USB socket on the side (or, perhaps, on top, as there is no 'right way up' for a Monome). The '64' is powered entirely by USB and no other power source is required, although the bigger units require an external PSU.
Monome Norns - Sound On Sound
Monome's enigmatic Norns can be anything you want it to be — if you're prepared to put the work in... The year 1967 saw the publication of a short science fiction story by Larry Niven entitled The Soft Weapon, which featured a small, mysterious, technologically advanced hand-held device capable of completely changing shape and function according to the position of a sliding control.
Livid Instruments Ohm64 - Sound On Sound
Unlike the Monome, the Ohm64 has numeric labels on most of its buttons, so it compromises minimalism in the name of practicality. Compared to the Monome, the Ohm64 is surprisingly large. It's wide enough to be rackmountable, and six Monome 64s would fit onto the same desk space.
Max For Live - Sound On Sound
The archetypal Monome sample-cutting application, MLR, is predictably available in Max For Live form, as is the multi‑function SevenUp Live, and Matthew Davidson (aka Stretta) recently ported all of his stand‑alone Monome instruments into an MFL format.
Akai APC40 - Sound On Sound
The Monome controllers (the 64 model, in particular) are completely open, but only have buttons, are more expensive, and require setting up to get them to work with Live. The Livid Ohm 64 has faders as well as buttons and is more configurable than the APC (until Max For Live arrives), but is twice the price and less integrated.
Soma Laboratory Lyra-8 - Sound On Sound
The Lyra-8’s front panel measures 265 x 265mm. Soma Laboratory’s Lyra-8 may force you to reconsider everything you think you know about synthesizers.
Novation Launchpad S - Sound On Sound
I'm starting to lose track of the number of grid-based DAW controllers I've reviewed over the last few years. From the original Monome to devices from Livid Instruments, Akai, Keith McMillen and, of course Ableton's new controller, the Push (reviewed in the March 2013 issue of SOS).

Novation Launchpad Pro - Sound On Sound
Novation are clearly aware of how many people have taken the Launchpad and used it for unexpected things. Many enthusiasts have used the Launchpad in place of the more expensive Monome to create deep software controllers, performance surfaces, art installations, etc. Of particular note is the Light Show phenomenon.
