The diameter and heights of lunar craters
In this experiment you will use images of the Moon (taken with the School's telescope) to identify impact craters on the lunar surface. You will then go on to measure the diameters of the craters and their heights.
Part 3: Measure the Height of Lunar Craters
It is possible to approximate the height of various surface features (like impact craters), by measuring the shadows they cast. As shown in the diagram, a crater with a height, H, casts a shadow with a length (as seen from above), L. The angle θ is the angle that the shadow makes with the lunar surface.
A Direct Hit? New Study Redefines the Moon’s Largest Crater
3 天之前 · A topographic model of the Moon using a color-scale from purple (low) to red (high) based on data collected by NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and Kaguya by the Japanese Space Agency. This is a global view to show the entirety of the South Pole-Aitken basin (SPA), the largest and oldest impact crater on the Moon.
List of craters on the Moon - Wikipedia
The large and relatively young lunar impact crater Tycho taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. [1]This is a list of named lunar craters. The large majority of these features are impact craters. The crater nomenclature is governed by the International Astronomical Union, and this listing only includes features that are officially recognized by that scientific society.
Crater dimensions from apollo data and supplemental sources
The lunar craters range in size from 400 m to 300 km across and include primary impact craters of the main sequence, secondary impact craters, craterlets atop domes and cones, and dark-halo craters. The terrestrial craters are between 10 m and 22.5 km in diameter and were formed by meteorite impact....
Lunar Craters - Science@NASA
2025年1月29日 · On the Moon, complex craters are generally around 9 miles (15 km) or more in diameter. (On Earth, they form at a much smaller size because of our planet’s stronger gravity.) Hayn Crater, located just northeast of Mare Humboldtianum, …
Topographic characterization of lunar complex craters
2013年1月16日 · We used Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter gridded data to determine the rim-to-floor crater depths, as well as the height of the central peak above the crater floor. We established power-law d-D and hcp - D relationships for complex craters on mare and highlands terrain.
The Biggest Crater on The Moon Is Much Bigger Than We Ever …
2024年12月9日 · But new research suggests that the ancient, gargantuan crater may not have formed the way we thought, and may be much bigger than previous studies suggest – a discovery that has exciting implications for future lunar missions to the basin.
Morphological characteristics of impact craters with diameters of …
2023年11月1日 · In this study, we systematically analyzed the depth, rim height, slope, and rock abundance of 15,135 impact craters between 5 and 20 km in diameter on the Moon, covering the simple and simple-to-complex transitional crater regimes.
The aim of this lab is to find out the width and height of some craters on the surface of the Moon. The basic idea is to measure the size of the shadows cast by the crater rims. Figure 1 below illustrates
