Moonsorrow is a Finnish pagan metal band formed in Helsinki in 1995. Musically, the band incorporates elements of black metal and folk metal in their sound. The band call their sound "epic heathen metal" [1] and try to distance themselves from the term "Viking metal".

The name of the band was inspired by Celtic Frost's song "Sorrows of the Moon". Started as a black metal band by the two Sorvali cousins. They started adding folk elements to their music eventually evolving into a pagan/folk metal band on their debut album Suden uni.They have progressively blackened their sound again, starting with the Verisäkeet album.
