Santa Fe sold the unit along with a flock of other F45's and SD45's to Morrison Knudsen in April 1994 and leased it back. The lease ended in late 1999 or early 2000, and what was by then Boise Locomotive Works/MPI cut up most of the units but kept 5989 around as an engine test bed.

2024年12月21日 · To MKM, to MPEX, to GECX. Santa Fe F45 5989 in 'Summit Meet' with the Union Pacific. Note two different logos on the Transamerica trailers, nos. one and four in the photo. Santa Fe F45 5989 rounding the curve just a few hundred yards west of Summit leading a TOFC freight. Things were just right when I could capture an F unit leading a TOFC train.

On January 29, 2000, MPEX 5978 and 5980 were lending their muscle to train H-BARPAS, a manifest from Barstow, CA to Pasco, WA. They were the only active F45's on the system at the time, and just four days later their leases were terminated.

When F45 5989 was repainted from the red and yellow SPSF "Kodachrome" scheme in the late 1980's, it received a small, "hood unit" size noseband. The stripes are just barely long enough to wrap around the corners of the nose. Nine years later, 5989 was still on former Santa Fe property, but as an MPEX lease unit.

MPEX 5989 shows evidence of her quick relettering job at Richmond, CA in mid-1999. This unit was one of several painted in the SPSF merger scheme in the mid-1980's. When painted back to blue and yellow, many F45's received smaller, hood-unit sized emblems instead of the larger, cowl-sized emblem modeled by 5987.

2021年2月7日 · GECX 5989 EMD F45, ex-MPEX, née-ATSF 5989, on Union Pacific train at Cheyenne, Wyoming, Sunday, 7 February 2021. The 5989 was headed to Albia, Iowa. What's a visit to Wyoming without wind.....? Thanks for the update! I was going to make another thread this evening asking if anyone had seen the unit on its way to Iowa since my thread the other day.
