The Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) requires EU Member States to take measures to achieve and maintain the Good Environmental Status (GES) of the marine environment, defined as: Good Environmental Status

The concept of ‘good environmental status’ (GES) is defined by the Marine Directive through eleven descriptors. These describe the state of the marine environment, such as conserving biodiversity or food webs.

The EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) was put in place to protect the marine ecosystem and biodiversity upon which our health and marine-related economic and social activities depend. To help EU countries achieve a good environmental status (GES), the directive sets out 11 illustrative qualitative descriptors.

The MSFD requires Member States to determine the characteristics of GES, (‘what does GES look like’), and develop environmental targets and associ-ated indicators to guide progress towards achieving or maintaining GES .
