It made its maiden flight in September 1963 and was produced until 1986. It is one of postwar Japan's most successful aircraft, with 704 manufactured in Japan and San Angelo, Texas, in the United States.

The MU-2, when properly maintained and flown within its designed flight envelope, in accordance with the POM and Flight Manual, is one of the safest airplanes in its class. Prior to 2006, the MU2 had a higher accident rate than it has today, but even then, it was pretty much in the middle of the pack when compared to others in its category.

It is a single-shaft turboprop with an integral gearbox, two-stage centrifugal compressor, reverse annular combustors and three-stage axial turbine. Each engine produces a maximum thrust of 776 hp and drives a three-bladed Hartzell HC-B3TN-5/T10178HB-11 fully-feathering reversible constant-speed propellers of 2.29 meters in diameter.
