Mit 172 Quadratkilometern zählt Muotathal zu den zehn flächenmässig grössten Gemeinden der Schweiz und ist beinahe so gross wie der ganze Kanton Zug. Auf dem Gemeindegebiet (Dorf und Gemeide mit "th" geschrieben, das geografische Tal mit "t") befindet sich eine der längsten Höhlen der Welt.

Muotathal is synonymous with nature, pristine authenticity and tradition. The region is home to unique natural treasures such as the Hölloch cave system, the virgin spruce forest and the karst/limestone area Silberen.

Muotathal ist ein Ort in einem von Bergen umzingelten Tal östlich des Vierwaldstättersees. Durch das Tal fliesst der Fluss Muota, der bei Brunnen in den Vierwaldstättersee mündet. Der auf 610 m ü. M. liegende Ort hat etwa 3500 Einwohner und wird von einer ursprünglichen und idyllischen Natur umgeben.

Il confine au canton d’Uri au sud et au canton de Glaris à l’est. Avec ses 172 kilomètres carrés, Muotathal fait partie des dix plus grandes communes de Suisse du point de vue de la superficie et est presque aussi grand que l’ensemble du canton de Zoug. L’une des plus grandes grottes du monde est située sur le territoire de la commune.
