Each week during September, the National Museum of African American History and Culture recognizes the contributions of four key figures in fashion; Ophelia DeVore, Arthur McGee, Willi Smith and Zelda Wynn Valdes.

The Smithsonian American Art Museum displays its collections and presents special exhibitions in two locations in Washington, DC. Its main building is located at the heart of a vibrant downtown cultural district, while its branch museum for contemporary craft, the Renwick Gallery, is located nine blocks west, near the White House.

The Renwick Gallery is located steps from the White House in the heart of historic federal Washington. This National Historic Landmark was designed by architect James Renwick Jr. in 1858 and was the first building in the United States built specifically to be an art museum.

He remakes the museum’s galleries into an immersive landscape marked by the crafted hides and bones of mammoths, a video projection of the long-dead animals come to life, and a large-scale beaded curtain depicting the Missouri family farm where he spent much of his childhood.

In celebration of the 2016 Grand Opening of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, SAAM will display 184 of its most important artworks by African Americans.

In 2021, the museum acquired a transformative collection of early American photography from Larry J. West. The L.J. West Collection includes 286 objects from the 1840s to the mid-1920s, including works by African American daguerreotypists James P. Ball, Glenalvin Goodridge, and Augustus Washington.
