Mwari (Mwali) is an omnipotent being, who rules over spirits and is the Supreme God of the religion. The same deity is applied and also referred to as Inkhosi in Northern and Southern Ndebele traditional religion. [1] Mwari's reverence dates back to the age of the ancient king Monomotapa, of the Mutapa Kingdom on the Zambezi River. [2]

Today, in Christian churches among the Shona-speaking people of Zimbabwe, Mwari is used as equivalent to God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Supreme Being, God the Creator. Roman Catholics have used Mwari for God for over forty years, but mainline Protestants employed the term regularly long before this (Creary 2011: 207–208).
