The CD64 is a game backup device made by UFO/Success Company for the Nintendo 64 that allows to run ROM files off a CD-ROM attached to the system. Similar to the Doctor V64 and the Z64 units for the N64, it is most commonly used for playing backups of Nintendo 64 games.

A rare device called the Protected Cartridge Decoder or “PCD” can do this for a V64 or CD64 but that mostly appealed to CD64 users who always needed a cartridge with a particular boot type for the controller-operated menu program (6102 “Mario boot”).

The Nintendo 64 has a whole bunch of development hardware used to make games for the Nintendo 64, many of which are quite rare nowadays and very hard to get a hold of. This page will contain a list of the various bits of hardware used on the Nintendo 64.

They are different devices, 64DD was an official nintendo addon. CD64 was a piracy device / third party unauthorized devkit.
