The 1963 crash of a National Airways Corporation DC3, with the loss of all 23 people on board, remains the worst air accident within New Zealand. The flight departed from Auckland, bound for Wellington via Tauranga, Gisborne and Napier. The weather was stormy, but forecasts underestimated the force of the wind.

On 3 July 1963 at approximately 9:09 am NZST, the flight, a Douglas DC-3 Skyliner, flew into a vertical rock face in the Kaimai Ranges near Mount Ngatamahinerua, at an altitude of 2460 feet (750 m). [1] Twenty-three people were on board.

2016年8月15日 · At the conclusion of the operating contract, the DC-3 returned to New Zealand in December 2013. Taking up it's previous registration of ZK-AWP, and carrying Air Chathams titles, it is now based at Auckland International Airport and operated both on charter flights and on the airline's Auckland to Whakatane scheduled services.
