The North British Railway (NBR) G Class (LNER Class Y9) is a class of 0-4-0 ST steam locomotive designed for shunting. Some locomotives were equipped with small wooden tenders to carry extra coal. They were introduced in 1882 and thirty-eight entered service on the NBR between 1882 and 1899.

The Drummond Y9 (NBR Class G) 0-4-0ST Shunters. The NBR Class G locomotives were introduced by Drummond. The first two were purchased in 1882 from Neilson & Co, to their standard design. Originally purchased for dock shunting, they proved to be eminently suitable for light shunting in both docks and the Scottish lowlands.

The 0-4-0 is associated with the earliest steam locomotives, but one of a pair built as late as 1868 on the North British Railway (NBR) survived to Grouping (1923). Many of the Y9 'Scottish Pugs' also ran with wooden trucks as coal tenders but these were classed as tank engines.

The NBR's locomotive classification system (introduced in 1913) is not very helpful because the same letter has been applied to several different classes. The North British Railway Study Group has developed its own classification system and a list can be found here.

To allow the G/Y9s to work on main line, the small coal bunker behind the cab was augmented by trailing four-wheel coal cars. Only four failed to survive to Grouping in 1923, when the LNER reclassified the other 34 as Y9s. Only one more would be withdrawn before 1953.

2009年1月12日 · I am converting a Hornby Smokey Joe to a Y9 does anyone know of a good set of drawings or any photographs from above showing cab roof and boiler top detail. Has anyone done this conversion or the GER Y5 conversion with the flat top tank.
