NGC 1396 is a dwarf elliptical galaxy [4] located 61 million light years away [5] in the constellation of Fornax. The galaxy was discovered by astronomer Julius Schmidt on January 19, 1865, [6] and is a member of the Fornax Cluster. [7] .

NGC 1396 is a Elliptical/Spiral Galaxy in the Fornax constellation. NGC 1396 is situated south of the celestial equator and, as such, it is more easily visible from the southern hemisphere. Given its B magnitude of 14.8, NGC 1396 is visible with the help of a telescope having an aperture of 20 inches (500mm) or more.

IC 1396 is a large H-II region with an angular diameter of about 3°, which is home to areas of active star formation, so-called globules. The most noticeable globule is the Elephant Trunk Nebula (also often referred to as IC 1396A).
