NGC 2247 is a Reflection Nebula in the Monoceros constellation. NGC 2247 is situated close to the celestial equator and, as such, it is at least partly visible from both hemispheres in certain times of the year. Given its B magnitude of 8.5, NGC 2247 is visible with the help of a binocular with a 60-70mm aperture or a small telescope.

The discovery of NGC 2247 is credited to the Irish astronomer R. J. Mitchell, an assistent of William Parsons, the 3 rd Earl of Rosse. He discovered the nebula on 14 February 1857 using the giant 72 inch reflector «Leviathan» at Birr Castle.

NGC 2245 looks like it is lit up by a hidden cluster called simply the NGC 2245 Stellar Group, with no distance estimates given. The 9th magnitude blue star HD 259431 appears to be the source star for NGC 2247, which would put it about 2400 light years away.

A curved section of dark nebulosity (LDN1606 & LDN1607), connects the largest blue area of nebulosity, (IC 447) with the blueish IC 446 forming a shape that resembles a long neck gourd.
