Messier 48 or M48, also known as NGC 2548, is an open cluster of stars in the equatorial constellation of Hydra. It sits near Hydra's westernmost limit with Monoceros, [7] about 18° 34′ to the east and slightly south of Hydra's brightest star, Alphard. [8] .

Messier 48, also known as NGC 2548, is an open star cluster located in the constellation Hydra. Discovered by the French astronomer Charles Messier in 1771, this celestial assembly is positioned approximately 1,500 light-years away from Earth, within the Milky Way galaxy.

However, as a result of some detective work by Oswald Thomas in 1934, it was realised that Messier had made a mistake in his data reduction, confusing the sign in determining the declination, and that the object listed by Messier as object 48 was really NGC 2548, some 5 degrees north of Messier's position.
