NGC 3581 is a HII Ionized region in the Carina constellation. NGC 3581 is situated south of the celestial equator and, as such, it is more easily visible from the southern hemisphere. The image below is a photograph of NGC 3581 from the Digitized Sky Survey 2 (DSS2 - see the credits section) taken in the red channel.

NGC 3576, 3579, 3581, 3582, 3584 and 3586 are all bright patches in the centre of the nebula. To the north of the NGC 3576 region are several star clusters which are probably quite close to the nebula.

Trying to image that from Southern California is tricky as there's so much solid ground in the way. Absolutely gorgeous Brian.
