2010年10月11日 · The beautiful spiral galaxy NGC 406 was discovered in 1834 by John Herschel and is here imaged in great detail by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. Located some 65 million light-years away, in the southern constellation of Tucana (the Toucan), NGC 406 is about 60 000 light-years across, roughly half the diameter of our galaxy, the Milky Way.

NGC 406 is a Galaxy in the Tucana constellation. NGC 406 is situated south of the celestial equator and, as such, it is more easily visible from the southern hemisphere. Given its B magnitude of 13.02, NGC 406 is visible with the help of a telescope having an aperture of 10 inches (250mm) or more.

However, Stewart, examining photographic plates, describes it as having a bright nucleus, with extremely extended wisps through it at 165 , not "round".
