Messier 60 or M60, also known as NGC 4649, is an elliptical galaxy approximately 57 [4] million light-years away in the equatorial constellation of Virgo. Together with NGC 4647, it forms a pair known as Arp 116. [8]

2019年9月4日 · Chandra's image of the elliptical galaxy NGC 4649 reveals a large, bright cloud of hot gas and 165 point-like sources. As in the elliptical galaxies, NGC 4697 and NGC 1553, most of the point-like sources are due to black holes and neutron stars in binary star systems.

NGC 4649 is a giant elliptical galaxy about 51 million light years from Earth in the constellation Virgo. By applying a new technique, scientists used Chandra data to measure the black hole at the galaxy's center to be about 3.4 billion times more massive than the Sun.

The authors performed a Chandra X-ray observation of the X-ray bright E2 elliptical galaxy NGC 4649 (M 60). In addition to bright diffuse emission, they resolved 165 discrete sources, most of which are presumably low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs).
