NGC 5534 is a Spiral Galaxy in the Virgo constellation. NGC 5534 is situated close to the celestial equator and, as such, it is at least partly visible from both hemispheres in certain times of the year. Given its B magnitude of 13.6, NGC 5534 is visible with the help of a telescope having an aperture of 14 inches (350mm) or more.

NGC 5534/Markarian 1379 is a very strange galaxy in western Virgo, almost into Libra. That may explain why a Virgo galaxy is in an area where virtually no galactic studies are being conducted. I came up nearly blank on the field but for this galaxy and its satellite.

The main western component is moderately bright and large, elongated 3:2 SW-NE, sharply concentrated with a small bright core and stellar nucleus, 40"x25". The dwarf companion Holm 623B = PGC 51057 is attached on the east side with the centers separated by just 26" (measured on the DSS2).
