NGC 6342 lies just about 80' SE of the more prominent cluster M9, and at about the same distance, so that these clusters are probably physical neighbors. Thus the inferior apparent size and brightness of NGC 6342 indicate that this globular is intrinsically much fainter and smaller than its prominent neighbor.
