NGC 6590 is a Reflection Nebula in the Sagittarius constellation. NGC 6590 is situated close to the celestial equator and, as such, it is at least partly visible from both hemispheres in certain times of the year. Given its B magnitude of 9.8, NGC 6590 is visible with the help of a binocular with a 80mm aperture or a small telescope.
APOD: August 10, 1997 - Nebulosity in Sagittarius
Dubbed NGC 6589 and NGC 6590, the colors of this nebulosity, are caused by gas and dust. The blue color of the nebula nearest the bright stars is caused by reflection off interstellar dust. The dust emits little visible light of its own - in the absence of a nearby star the dust would appear dark, blocking light from background stars.
NGC 6590 - Skyhound
Although not as bright as NGC 6590, it can be observed in telescopes as small as 12-inches, if not smaller. Look for two separate areas of nebulosity near a bright star (10th mag HD 167638). A bit further away, to the northeast, lies a much larger patch of nebulosity.
