M.2, pronounced m dot two[1] and formerly known as the Next Generation Form Factor (NGFF), is a specification for internally mounted computer expansion cards and associated connectors. M.2 replaces the Mini SATA (mSATA) standard and the Mini PCIe (mPCIe) standard (which is how it got the short name of M dot 2 from being Mini SATA 2).

NGFF：全称Next Generation Form Factor，是一种计算机内部扩展卡及相关连接器规范。 目的是取代mini PCI-E和mSATA，主要为固态硬盘等准备。 现在的名字叫M.2,没错，NGFF就是M.2。

真相大白，m.2和ngff是同义词，凡是m.2，无论是sata的还是pcie的，又或者是少见的usb、sdio等的，都是ngff。 和NGFF相对的概念不是PCIe，而是“2.5英寸”，因为NGFF（也就是m.2）指的是一种外部形态。

M.2是一种标准的连接器接口，最早称作 NGFF (Next Generation Form Factor)，由 PCI-SIG协会 主导，符合 PCI Express M.2 Specification. 主要设计目的是在同一连接器上支持多种模组/卡。 M.2是small form factor，紧凑型的结构设计。

2023年9月8日 · ngff接口的性能取决于所使用的协议和总线带宽，如果使用SATA协议，那么最高速度为6Gbps；如果使用PCIe 3.0 x4协议，那么最高速度为32Gbps。 不同协议的ngff接口也有不同的插槽针脚分布，例如B键、M键、B+M键等，要注意与主板或笔记本的插槽兼容。

ngff其实就是个过渡产品 传输速度和SATA接口硬盘是一样的，大约就是四五百M的样子。 现在M2接口能到六七千M，不是一个量级，但价格却差不多，ngff没有一丁点优势。
