Using 220 liveried vehicles, driven by 250 drivers working in shifts 24 hours a day, seven days a week, NHS Blood and Transplant’s (NHSBT) Logistics Department transports everything from blood to biscuits between centres, team bases, session venues, hospitals and research laboratories, all over England.

Our fleet services provide and maintain contracts for over 300 liveried vehicles, as well as maintaining the contract for the NHS Blood and Transplant lease car scheme. We also cover occupational road risk, driver training, insurance and legislation. Our services and resources team looks at how we can meet the needs of our departments.

Its remit is to provide a reliable, efficient supply of blood, organs and associated services to the NHS. Since NHSBT was established, the organisation has maintained or improved the quality of the services delivered to patients, stabilised the rising cost of blood, and centralised a number of corporate services.

BSMS is hosted by NHSBT but independently funded via the UK Forum. Central to our work is VANESA, a data management system, where hospital and blood service data is collected. In return participants can view real-time data and charts. For hospitals to submit their blood stock usage, and get real-time reporting.

Across the UK we have approximately 1700 venues that we use to host blood donation sessions, so that we can keep our blood stocks at a safe level. To help us reduce our venue hire expenditure we are always looking for low cost - or even free - venues to make our donation sessions more cost effective.

Ravanan confirmed that following publication of NICE guidance, Commissioners, NHSBT, BTS, Clinicians and kidney colleagues have worked to establish a process for adult kidney transplants. This will extend to highly sensitised paediatric patients, should this be required.
