Specifics - S3 class, 69" drviers, impressive 245 psi boiler pressure, 25x34" cylinders, engine weight of 428,500 lb, tractive effort of 64,135 lb. All of the S class had Worthington Type 5 SA feed water heaters, Elesco Type E superheaters, Standard Type MB stokers, Precision Type F-3 reverse gear, and 14" (356 mm) piston valves.

In 1949 the Nickel Plate took delivery of the last steam engines built for domestic use by the Lima Locomotive Works, 2-8-4s Nos. 770-779 in class S-3. Lima had also built most of NKP's existing fleet of these super-power locomotives, and until mid-1958 these famous locomotives were still handling high-speed traffic on the Chicago-to-Buffalo line.
