The aircraft, nicknamed "Kermit" (N42RF) and "Miss Piggy" (N43RF) have supported hurricane and tropical storm research in the Atlantic, Caribbean, Gulf of America (formerly Gulf of Mexico) and the Eastern Pacific.

The Lockheed WP-3D Orion is a highly modified P-3 Orion used by the Aircraft Operations Center division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The aircraft are operated by officers of the NOAA Commissioned Officer Corps.

The two WP-3D airplanes operated by NOAA's Aircraft Operations Center constitute a unique resource for airborne hurricane research, and for atmospheric research in general. They are civilian versions of the U.S. Navy's P-3 four-engine maritime reconnaissance airplane. The NOAA airplanes, N42RF and N43RF, were commissioned in the late 1970s.
