To protest the passage of Proposition 8 and homophobia more generally, organizers of the NOH8 campaign began to take portrait photos of LGBTQIA+ people and allies as a form of "visual protest." In each portrait, the sitter had "NOH8" painted on his or her cheek and a piece of silver masking tape placed over his or her mouth.
