NRCM recognizes and honors the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians, Mi’kmaq Nation, Penobscot Nation, and the Passamaquoddy Tribe, collectively the Wabanaki Nations. Wabanaki translates as “People of the Dawn.”

The National Advisory Board was established in 1997 in recognition of NRCM's increasing influence on environmental discussions outside of Maine and in support of national and regional efforts to address the major environmental issues facing the state.
