Crafted by General Motors in April 1971, the Southern Railway 3170 was the pioneer in a series of 31 SD40 locomotives designated for the Southern Railway. This impressive machine, boasting a 3,000 horsepower turbocharged diesel engine, dedicatedly served both the Southern and subsequently, the Norfolk Southern Railway companies.

Following the suggestion by NS employees, the 3170 (the first SOU SD40) was restored by NS in early 2015 with the intention of it being donated to a museum. The old engine was replaced at Altoona with a used one out of a retired GP38AC, so that NS would not have to upgrade the unit to meet increased emission standards.

NS (SOU) EMD SD40 3170 has been retired and donated to the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum. The Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum is pleased to announce the recent donation by Norfolk Southern of former Southern Railway diesel locomotive 3170, a model SD40.

Electro-Motive SD40 Diesels. 3170 was built in April 1971, #37355, FN 7308-1. It was assigned as Norfolk Southern 3171, Class SD40, but never relettered. It was retired in 2007 and sent to Tennesee Valley Railway Museu m and restored as Southern 3170. 3171 was built in April 1971, #37356, FN 7308-2.
