In 1951, the post became the home of the United States Army Armor and Desert Training Center and was designated Fort Irwin in 1961. In 1981, the installation was re-designated as the National Training Center (NTC) and since then its development as the premier training site of the U.S. Army has been nonstop.

The 1,000-square-kilometer northern portion of the training area is further enhanced with 1,543 portable, remotely controlled target lifters and discarded military vehicles. The NTC is the only U.S. military training facility that supports brigade-level, live-fire exercises.

The NTC at Fort Irwin is the only place in the continental United States where military service members are able to train at full operational capacity, using all systems they will later use in combat. NTC training include traditional classroom study, virtual training in digital cyberspace and rigorous personal physical fitness training programs.
