In the context of the Vietnam War (1955–1975), the army was referred to by its opposition forces as the North Vietnamese Army (NVA; Vietnamese: Quân đội Bắc Việt), serving as the military force of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.

The National People's Army (German: Nationale Volksarmee, pronounced [natsi̯oˈnaːlə ˈfɔlksʔaʁˌmeː] ⓘ; NVA [ɛn faʊ ˈʔaː] ⓘ) were the armed forces of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) from 1956 to 1990.

During the First Indochina War (1946–1954), Vietnam War (1955–1975), Cambodian–Vietnamese War (1977–1989), Sino-Vietnamese War (1979) and the Sino-Vietnamese conflicts 1979– 1991 (1979–1991), the Vietnam People's Ground Force relied almost entirely on Soviet-derived weapons and equipment systems.

The People’s Army of Vietnam (PAVN), popularly known as the North Vietnamese Army (NVA), was the main branch of the armed forces of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. Like the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN), the PAVN was divided into regular, regional, and security forces that each received different degrees of training and supplies.

The NVA were regular army forces of North Vietnam. The People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) grew out of the Vietnam Liberation Army (VLA), the military wing of the Indochinese Communist Party, the original Vietnamese communist party that was founded in the 1920s and later transformed by Ho Chi Minh into the Communist Party that rules Vietnam today.

The North Vietnamese Army, well-trained and well-equipped, was defeated on the battlefield in every encounter, but the shock to Americans at home solidified anti-war sentiment.
