2006年7月4日 · Norfolk & Western 0-8-0 switcher No. 244 holds the distinction of being the last U.S. reciprocating steam locomotive built for an American Class 1 railroad. It was the final steam engine to emerge from N&W’s Roanoke Shops, delivered to the railroad in December 1953. The first 0-8-0 was built in 1844 by Ross Winans for the Baltimore & Ohio.

The Norfolk and Western S1 and S1a class 0-8-0s were a fleet of 75 0-8-0 switcher type steam locomotives that worked on the Norfolk and Western Railway during the 1950s. In 1950, the Norfolk & Western Railroad bought 30 0-8-0 Switchers from the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad.

Engines 2090-2099 were rebuilt and renumbered 2110-2119 in years 1940-1941, except 2092 wrecked [1] 2174 was the one of the last steam locomotives to be withdrawn in the USA. N&W 620 remains in operation at the N.C. Transportation Museum.

Built between 1881-1890 and in service until 1958. Like the Teutonics, these 0-8-0s used Stephenson link motion on the outside with a "slip-eccentric" link between the two outside HP cylinders and the single LP cylinder under the smokebox.
