National Waterways 4 and 5, IWAI initiated the proposals for development in July 2010. Techno-economic studies for establishment of National Waterways NW-4 was done by Water And Power Consultancy Services (WAPCOS), a subsidiary of Ministry of Water Resources.

National Waterway 5 (NW5): NW5 links Odisha to West Bengal, utilizing stretches of the Brahmani River, East Coast Canal, Matai River, and Mahanadi River Delta. National Waterway 6 (NW6) : Proposed in Assam, NW6 aims to connect Lakhipur to Bhanga in the Barak River, covering a distance of 121 km.

Development of NW5 and NW64 in Odisha: National Waterway-5 (NW-5) in Mahanadi / Brahmani delta, Matai River & East Coast Canal (ECC) was declared as a NW in November 2008 for total length of about 588 Km. The lengthwise distribution of NW-5 in 3 different stretches, as per the DPR is given below:

2023年10月16日 · NW5 comprises various stretches, including Mahanadi Delta (101 km), Brahmani River, and others (265 km), Matai River (40 km), and Geonkhali-Charbatia (217 km). Coal transportation plays a significant role in this waterway.

NW5- It is situated on the river of Brahmani, Delta canal and the east coast canal. It extends from Goenkhali to Talcher in the states of Odisha and West Bengal. The NW6 on the Barak River is just about to get ready for use but it is not operational for now.
