The R44 is a New York City Subway car model built by the St. Louis Car Company from 1971 to 1973 for the B Division and the Staten Island Railway (SIR). The cars replaced many R1–9 series cars, and all remaining 1925 Standard Steel built SIRTOA ME-1 trains, providing Staten Island with a new fleet of railcars.

The R44 was the first group of cars to be built with composition brake shoes rather than cast iron which had been universally used by railroads until shortly before this time. The Authority had experimented with composition shoes on both SMEE and AMUE equipment a few years before the R44's were ordered.

The R44 was the first subway car since the BMT Green Hornet to incorporate a two-note warning tone that sounds immediately before the doors begin to close as the train prepares to leave the station. This has become the signature sound of the New York City subway and is used with later cars. The R44 also set the world speed record for a subway car.

Cars #388-399 were originally in the NYC Car pool but were later transferred to the Staten Island Railway car pool. Also, the cars in the SI Railway car pool have several nicknames for the models including R43, R44SI, R44 SIRT & MUE-2.
