NY 8 was realigned onto a freeway from Clayville to New Hartford in the early 1970s. From there, NY 8 overlaps with NY 5 and NY 12 north along Utica's North-South Arterial. The freeway originally continued into New Hartford Street prior to the construction of NY 840 in 2005.
