The New Zealand Census of Population and Dwellings (Māori: Te Tatauranga o ngā Tāngata Huri Noa i Aotearoa me ō rātou Whare Noho) is a quinquennial national population and housing census conducted by Statistics New Zealand, a government department, every five years.

New Zealand’s 35th Census of Population and Dwellings was held on 7 March 2023 and showed that the 2023 Census usually resident population (CURP) count was 4,993,923 – up 294,168 (6.3 percent) from the 2018 Census (4,699,755).

The 2023 New Zealand census, which took place on 7 March 2023, [1] was the thirty-fifth national census in New Zealand. It implemented measures that aimed to increase the Census' effectiveness in response to the issues faced with the 2018 census, including supporting Māori to complete the census.

The 2023 Census, held on Tuesday 7th March, was the 35th New Zealand Census of Population and Dwellings. The first official census was run in 1851, and since 1877 there has been a census every five years, with only four exceptions.
