Understanding tic disorders and Tourette’s syndrome
2022年8月22日 · Tourette’s syndrome (TS) is a more severe and persistent tic disorder. Compared to simple motor or verbal tics, TS is uncommon. It is estimated to affect less than 1 in 100 people. It almost always starts before the age of 18 and is rare in adults. Males are more commonly affected than females. TS patients have multiple motor and vocal tics.
Tic disorders including Tourette syndrome (TS) are neuropsychiatric disorders that are common referrals to paediatricians, paediatric neurologists and child psychiatrists. Although differentiating tics and TS from other movement disorders is not. difficult, it is essential to detect comorbid conditions and their contribution to TS.

Tourette’s is a combination of both physical (motor) and vocal tics that are involuntary and repetitive and that wax and wane over time. The tics have to have been present for at least a year before the age of 18 for a formal diagnosis to be made, however there is no pathway to diagnosis for TS currently in NZ, although we are working on this.
