The Core Values have been described using the underpinning personal Core Values and used to come up with the NBSZ Destiny, Cause, Calling, Vision, and Mission. Each Department/Unit is expected to come up with Department/Unit Core Values (derived from individual employee member values) that feed into these overarching NBSZ Core Values.

1. NBSZ Background. The National Blood Service is a non-profit making organisation (CR442/58). In executing its mandate, NBSZ seeks to improve the quality of life of patients in need of blood without any form of discrimination through collecting, processing and distributing safe adequate blood and blood products.

Platelets. Irregular disc-shaped components of blood that assist in blood clotting. Their role is to help stop bleeding when there is an injury to the body and this, they accomplish by forming a blood clot that seals the wound

NBSZ is mandated by the ministry of Health and Child Welfare to collect, process and distribute safe adequate blood and blood products. This is achieved through: Collection of blood from voluntary non-remunerated donors as embodied in the Code of Ethics and Principles of Blood Donation and Transfusion of the ISBT (General Assembly ISBT I12: 2000).

Post Donation. Following your donation you will receive refreshments and it is recommended that you stay until you feel strong enough to leave. After donating, you should increase your fluid intake for the next 24-48 hours; avoid strenuous and physical exertion, heavy lifting or pulling with the arm for about 5 hours.
