Angel (使徒 しと, shito?) is an ambiguous term that has various meanings within the Evangelion mythos depending on the context. As most commonly used in the show and elsewhere, the word "Angel" refers to any of Adam 's fifteen children, whom NERV must systematically destroy over the course of the story.

Angels are the secondary antagonists of the Neon Genesis Evangelion series. They are giant malevolent monsters of extremely varied shapes and powers, originating from a being known as Adam.

Shinji must pilot an Evangelion, a giant biomechanical mecha, to fight beings known as Angels. The series explores the experiences and emotions of the Evangelion pilots and Nerv members as they battle Angels. They are called upon to understand the ultimate cause of events and the motives behind human action.

Most of the franchise features an apocalyptic mecha action story, which revolves around the efforts by the paramilitary organization NERV to fight hostile beings called Angels, using giant humanoids called Evangelions piloted by select teenagers.
