National Health Insurance (国民健康保険, Kokumin-Kenkō-Hoken) is one of the two major statutory types of insurance programs available in Japan. The other is Employees' Health Insurance (健康保険, Kenkō-Hoken). National Health insurance is designed for people who are not eligible to be members of any employment-based health insurance program.

National Health Insurance (NHI) In Japan, a national health insurance system is available to reduce medical costs. Foreign residents who will be staying in Japan for three months or more have to subscribe to the National Health Insurance program (NHI; also known as "Kokuho").

2024年6月19日 · Foreigners living in Japan for over three months must enroll in the National Health Insurance (NHI) program. The NHI covers medical treatment, hospitalization, and prescription drugs. The monthly premium for NHI is based on income and age, usually around 10% of the insured person's income.

Under NHI, patients need to pay 30% of the total cost of care at clinics and hospitals. More than 90% of Japanese hospitals and clinics, including dental clinics, accept National Health Insurance. NHI also provides benefits for high medical costs associated with surgery and hospitalization.

NHI covers the self-employed, unemployed, and retired persons under 75. These plans are currently administered through municipalities, but administration will be transferred to prefectural offices in 2018.
