Nocona was a primary route leading into the grasslands necessary for the cattle drives north. The settlement of Nocona began in the 1870s when William Broaddus and D. C. Jordan moved 15,000 cattle into the region and established a ranch near the present townsite.

Nocona Leathergoods was established in 1926, making leather purses, wallets and other small leather products. In 1932 they reorganized under the name of Nokona and began making baseball gloves and footballs in 1934.

Nocona's hometown Christmas is held the first weekend of December with kid's activities, a fish fry, and a parade. It ends with some pictures with Santa and entertainment in the park.
