My theory is that Eggman tried to modify technology he barely understood to upgrade Metal Sonic into his neo form and that caused him to go rogue, hence the plot of Sonic Heroes. “It has combined your data with the power of chaos and has become super strong! You can’t defeat it”. He was first named in Sonic Rivals if I remember correctly.
