There are eight main groups of Nogais: the Ak Nogai, the Karagash, the Kuban-Nogai, the Kundraw-Nogai, the Qara-Nogai, the Utars, Bug-Nogai, and the Yurt-Nogai. Their name comes from their eponymous founder, Nogai Khan (lit. 'dog' in Mongolian), a grandson of Jochi.

Nogai is also known as Karanogai, Kubanogai, Nogaitsy, Nogalar, Nogay, Noghai, Noghay, Noghaylar or Yurt Tatar. Dialects include Central Nogai or Nogai Proper, which is spoken in Stavropool; Karanogay or Qara-Nogai (Black/Northern Nogai), which is spoken in Dagestan and Chechnya, and Aqnogai (White/Western Nogai), which is spoken in Karachay ...

In the Astrakhan Region, on the lower reaches of the Volga there live some 30,000 people of Nogay origin, falling into four ethnic groups: the Yurt (the Privolzhsk District), the Kundrovets (the village of Tuluganovka), the Karagash (Krasnoyarsk and neighbouring districts) and the Utar-Alabugaty (the areas adjoining the Kalmyk Autonomous SSR).

Here, for complex reasons, they were “forgotten” for a long time (Karagash, Yurt and 4–5 of their subgroups), but have been actively involved in research since the late 1980s. Sources for them are both scarce and heterogeneous. Inevitably, there is a combination of oral and written (the author’s dispute with the late V. V. Trepavlov).
