  2. 美洲河狸,又称北美河狸,是河狸科河狸属的一种,是原生于北美洲的啮齿动物,但现已被引进南美巴塔哥尼亚及欧洲部分地区。在北美洲,本物种通常直接称为“河狸”,其他名字,如美国河狸 和加拿大河狸等名字是要和和分布在欧洲的欧亚河狸区分。美洲河狸是加拿大国家象征动物及俄勒冈州的州代表动物。 其种加词“canadensis”意为“加拿大的”。 美洲河狸是北美洲最大的啮齿动物,比欧洲的物种还要来得大得多,两者皆是北美洲和欧洲最大的啮齿动物,唯南美洲的水豚比两者河狸物种更大。有时欧亚河狸的体型会比美洲河狸大一点,但美洲河狸通常有着比欧洲物种更大的体型。成年重量通常约 11至32千克公斤, 20千克公斤为平均。在纽约的成年雄性河狸的体重平均则约 18.9千克公斤, 而非当地物种的芬兰的成年雌性平均约 18.1千克公斤。然而在俄亥俄州的河狸体重平均约16.8千克公斤。本物种因遵照了伯格曼法则,在北方的河狸较南方得大。美洲河狸的体型平均略小于欧洲物种从头部到尾部的长度约74~90厘米 尾巴可长到 20~35厘米。甚至也有纪录到 50千克 公斤重的河狸。
