The Nuer people are a Nilotic ethnic group concentrated in the Greater Upper Nile region of South Sudan. They also live in the Ethiopian region of Gambella. The Nuer speak the Nuer language, which belongs to the Nilotic language family. They are the second-largest ethnic group in South Sudan and the largest ethnic group in Gambella, Ethiopia. [4]

At the beginning of the 1800s, the Nuer occupied an area of approximately 8,700 square miles in the Western Nile region, encompassing the territories of the Bul, Leek, Western Jikany, Jagei, and Dok tribes, situated west of the Nile River and north of the 7°52 N latitude.
Dinka groups inhabit the vast arc of land running north, west, and south of the central Nile basin. Nuer groups occupy the central basin itself, extending eastwards along the Sobat and Baro rivers all the way into southwestern Ethiopia.
