2021年9月1日 · The Nolli map not only distinguishes between public and private spaces but also uses different graphic symbols to indicate spaces that people can see but cannot walk through, such as rivers, lawns, and plantations.

The Nolli Map Website presents the 1748 Nolli map of Rome as a dynamic, interactive, hands-on tool. The public now has access to cataloged information about the map in both written and graphical form.

La Nuova Topografia di Roma (the new topography of Rome) is an epochal masterpiece of mapmaking by Giambattista Nolli (1701-1756), an Italian geometer and architect. Nolli published his work in 1748 after 12 years of surveying and engraving, a detailed representation of Rome inside the city walls, on 36 sheets, 12 of which contain the map.

He is best known for his ichnographic plan of Rome, the Pianta Grande di Roma which he began surveying in 1736 and engraved in 1748, and now universally known as the Nolli Map. The map is composed of 12 copper plate engravings that together measure 176 centimetres (69 in) by 208 centimetres (82 in).

The “Nolli Map”—a highly accurate ichnographic plan (as opposed to a bird’s eye perspective typical of earlier representations)— was a milestone in the art and science of cartography, and a touchstone for Roman and urban studies and a prototype for the study of spatial history.

Giambattista Nolli designed this well-known drawing and map in 1748, encapsulating the urban fabric of central Rome at this date. The drawing is a large scale image depicting central Rome at the time, and the many landscape areas surrounding the city.

The Great Plan of Rome, better known as the Nolli Map of Rome, is made up of 12 exquisite copper-plate engravings, which in total measure 176 cm by 208 cm (69 inches by 82 inches). It depicts the Eternal City in astonishing detail.
