The Co-Prosecutors’ first Introductory Submission was filed naming five individuals for investigation: Nuon Chea, Khieu Samphan, Ieng Sary, Ieng Thirith and Kaing Guek Eav (alias Duch). The nationwide charges against the first four individuals were heard at trial in Case 002.

In 2014, Nuon Chea received a life sentence for crimes against humanity, alongside another top-tier Khmer Rouge leader, Khieu Samphan, and a further trial convicted him of genocide in 2018. These life sentences were merged into a single life sentence by the Trial Chamber on 16 November 2018. [5] . He died while serving his sentence in 2019.

NUON Chea born LAO Kim Lorn (1926-2019), was the Deputy Secretary of the CPK, Chairman of the People’s Representative Assembly, and temporarily served as acting Prime Minister of Democratic Kampuchea. He was sentenced to life imprisonment for genocide, crimes against humanity and grave breaches of the Geneva Conventions.
