2023年8月26日 · The transgender people of Manipur, known as Nupi Maanbi, have had a colourful history - from being accepted in society to being ostracised to now finally finding their own voices. It holds much relevance today as those of the third gender in the State and the nation overall continue to be silenced by society out of shame for their natural identity.

The nupi maanbis are a man to woman transgender community of the contemporary Manipur (the essay exclusively discusses transgender women, although other queer communities need crucial attention). The 21 st century nupi maanbis occupy a paradoxical place in the Manipuri society.

Male to female Transgender people (TGs) of Manipur are known by a local term “Nupi Manbi” meaning effeminate or one who looks like a woman (from Manpuri nupi meaning woman and manbi, loosely look alike). The term nupi manbi is of very recent origin and was coined by a group of LGBT activists.

The main objective of the research is to explore how the transgender law and policy shapes the lives of Manipuri indigenous Nupi Maanbi and Nupa Maanba (transgender women and men), identity and community. The findings and recommendations of the research are to be used as an advocacy tool in various United Nations Bodies and Mechanism.

So, the study tries to understand the process of socialization and also the stigmas as associated with the Nupi Manbi in the context of Manipur and how such processes land them to a vulnerable situation – socially, economically, physically as well as mentally by analysing the primary data collected through analysis of the In-depth Interviews.
