Classified as E 66 and nicknamed Pearson's Dream after its designer, [1] it was an experimental Mallet locomotive designed to work on the Rimutaka Incline. The "E" classification was previously used by the Double Fairlie E class of 1872-75, but the classification was free as they had all been withdrawn by the time E 66 entered service.

Basically a tank-engine variant of the Ab Pacifics (Locobase 2489) designed by the NZGR's chief mechanical engineer H H Jackson, these were used in suburban commuting service in Auckland and Wellington. Some also operated between Taihape and Taumarunui on the North Island.

2004年11月19日 · Supplied by English builders Avonside (6) and Vulcan Foundry (2), these double Fairlie engines were specifically intended for ruling grades of nearly 3% and very tight curves. Ironically, the design demonstrated a tendency toward cracked frames and the flexible connections from the boiler to the cylinders leaked.

According to Hollingsworth (1982), it was NZGR's AW Beattie who responded to a Baldwin suggestion of a camelback 4-6-0 with the idea of putting a trailing axle under the bigger firebox. The larger grate was needed to burn the lower-calorie New Zealand lignite coal.
