The Organization of American States (OAS) is the world's oldest regional organization, dating back to the First International Conference of American States, held in Washington, D.C., from October 1889 to April 1890. At that meeting the establishment of the International Union of American Republics was approved.

Headquartered in Washington, D.C., United States, the OAS is a "multilateral regional body focused on human rights, electoral oversight, social and economic development, and security in the Western Hemisphere", according to the Council on Foreign Relations. [1] . As of November 2023, 32 states in the Americas are OAS members. [2][3]

The House of the Americas, headquarters of the Organization of American States (OAS), was inaugurated in 1910. It is a distinctive building in Washington, D.C., because its architecture reflects the unity of the American Hemisphere, with influences from the Spanish colonial era, the native peoples of the Continent, and Europe.

The Pan American Union Building is the headquarters for the Organization of American States. It is located at 17th Street N.W. between C Street N.W. and Constitution Avenue, Northwest, Washington, D.C. [1]

OAS Event Calendar Each year the OAS Secretary General publishes a proposed Program-Budget for the coming calendar year. The OAS General Assembly meets in a Special Session to approve the Program-Budget.
