Many game developers treat them as zip files, so renaming them as .zip might get you somewhere. But beyond that, there is no standard, it will vary from game to game.

If your app is exceeding 50MB (Specially because of the resources) you convert Expansion file to .obb format. This allows you to have apk sizes larger than 50 MB. Google Play allows you to host additional resources for free.
